The Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program – 2021
The Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program - 2021

The Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program has always been one of the sharpest arrows in Canada’s quiver of Family Sponsorship programs. Today announcement by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that Canada would be accepting the highest recorded number of PGP applications in a year, under the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program – 2021, added strength to the foundation of Canada’s Family Reunification pillars.

This Immigration program works through a Lottery Based system. Eligible Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents need to submit an ‘Interest to Sponsor’ form for their Parents or Grandparents if they meet the eligibility criteria of the program. Eligible applications are randomly picked up through the Lottery and sent invitations to Apply.

With this announcement, IRCC will be looking to accept 30,000 applications this year under the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program – 2021. This is the highest ever number of announced intakes under this program in any year. In 2020, through a similar announcement IRCC had accepted 10,000 applications to sponsor parents or grandparents. This year again IRCC would be accepting applications over a 2-week period starting from September 20, 2021, onwards. The one caveat for all applicants. Only applicants who had submitted an ‘interest to sponsor’ form during the 2020 intake, will be considered for this draw.

This years’ application submission would happen by updating the information previously entered during the 2020 intake process.

To be eligible,

  • one must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or a Registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • be 18 years & plus of age.
  • The individual must be residing in Canada
  • the family household income (Combined income of Sponsor along with Spouse/Common-Law partner) must exceed the Income requirements for the previous three years.

Normally while calculating Income Requirements, 30%, to The Minimum Necessary Income thresholds set by IRCC, is added. For 2020, in light of the hardships brought about by COVID-19, the additional 30% requirement had been removed by IRCC.
