Study Permit Extension

International students in Canada who are unable to complete tier studies in the time period stipulated by the Study permit will need to apply for a Study permit extension. This is essential for students to continue studying longer than the validity period of their study permit.

To extend the permit, the international student has to submit an application with the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to extend the duration of their study permit.

This application has to be submitted electronically unless otherwise specified.

The Canadian government requires that most temporary residence applications from within Canada be made electronically,
which includes all applications for study or work permits or applications for renewals of study or work permits made from within Canada

International students need to submit their application for a study permit extension at least 30 days before its expiry date. If the applicant fails to apply for an extension, before the expiry of the study permit validity, the applicant becomes “Out Of Status”. The candidate will then need to apply for “Status Restoration”.

Your study permit expires either:

  • on the date marked on the study permit
  • 90 days after you complete your studies

International students can lose their status in Canada if they:

  • Don’t apply for a new study permit, for a work permit or to stay in Canada as a visitor
  • Don’t respect the conditions of the permit

Study Permit Extension Application Process

You can apply online or submit a paper-based application. The processing time varies.
