Overview
Canada welcomes millions of visitors each year for tourism, business, and family visits. For visiting Canada temporarily, most travelers need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This guide provides detailed information on the various types of visitor visas, eligibility requirements, the application process, and more.
Visitor Visas (Temporary Resident Visas - TRVs)
Canada offers various visitor visas, or Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), for those looking to visit the country for tourism, family visits, or business purposes. Understanding the different types and requirements can help streamline your application process.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

How Long You Can Stay, and How to Extend
A visitor is normally authorized to remain in Canada for six months from the date of entry. That period is not automatic in every case: a border services officer can authorize a shorter or longer stay, and where they do, the date is written in your passport.
Working Out Your Authorized Period:

A visitor record extends your status inside Canada, but it is not a visa and does not permit re-entry after you leave
The distinction that catches travellers out. A visitor record and a visitor visa are different documents doing different jobs. The record keeps your status valid inside Canada. To return after leaving you still need a valid visitor visa or eTA, whichever applies to your nationality.
The Multiple-Entry Visa Is No Longer the Default
For years the standard outcome of a successful visitor visa application was a multiple-entry visa valid up to ten years. That stopped being the norm in November 2024, when IRCC amended its instructions to state that a multiple-entry visa issued to maximum validity is no longer the standard document.

Officers now have full discretion over both the entry type and the validity period. Ten years remains the maximum, limited by passport or biometrics expiry, but it is no longer what you should expect by default. Single-entry visas are typically issued for one-time events, short-term work or study under six months, and certain country-specific procedures.

What Actually Decides a Visitor Visa Application
Visitor visa refusals are among the most common decisions we are asked to review, and the reasons given are remarkably consistent. Officers are rarely doubting that you want to visit. They are doubting that you will leave.
Strengthening an Application:

Evidence of employment or business ownership that requires your return, with dates and approved leave where relevant

Financial documents showing a consistent history, not a single deposit made shortly before applying

A clear, specific itinerary and purpose, rather than a general intention to visit

Where a host is inviting you, an invitation letter supported by their status and their own circumstances

Honest disclosure of any previous refusal, since an undisclosed refusal is a far bigger problem than a disclosed one
One further point worth knowing: since 31 January 2025 IRCC and CBSA officers can cancel an eTA, visitor visa, work permit or study permit on a case-by-case basis, including where there is doubt a person will leave by the end of their authorized stay. Applications and conduct are looked at together, so building the file properly the first time is materially cheaper than addressing a refusal later.
