What a PGWP is, and who can get one

The Post Graduation Work Permit is an open work permit for people who have finished an eligible program of study at a Canadian learning institution. Open means you can work for almost any employer, anywhere in Canada, which is why it is the bridge most international students use to gain the Canadian work experience that leads to permanent residence. To qualify, you must have studied full time and maintained valid status during your studies, completed a program of at least 8 months at a designated learning institution, and applied within the deadline after graduating. It is a once in a lifetime permit, so applying correctly the first time matters more than almost any other permit you will file.

The 2024 to 2026 rule changes you need to know

PGWP eligibility changed significantly for students whose study permit application was submitted on or after 1 November 2024. Two new tests now apply on top of the older rules:

• A language test is now mandatory. Every applicant must prove language ability, where before many did not need to.
• A field of study requirement applies to non-degree graduates. College, polytechnic and other non-university graduates must have studied in an eligible field linked to a long-term labour shortage. Degree graduates are not affected by this test.

The list of eligible fields has itself been revised more than once, so a program that qualified for a friend last year may not qualify today, or the reverse. This is the single biggest reason self-filed applications are being refused in 2026, and it is the first thing to confirm before you spend the application fee.

The PGWP language requirement, explained

If your program falls under the new rules, you need a valid English or French test result, in all four skills, that is less than two years old on the day you apply:

• University graduates, including bachelor, master and doctoral degrees, need Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7, which is roughly IELTS 6.0 in each band, or the equivalent in CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF or TCF.
• College, polytechnic and other non-university graduates need CLB 5, a lower bar, but still one you must plan and book for in advance.

Booking a test late is one of the most common ways graduates miss their application deadline, because seats fill up and results take time. If you do not have a valid score yet, that changes your whole timeline, and the guide walks through exactly what to do.

How long your PGWP will last

The length of your permit is tied to the length of your program. A program of at least 8 months and under two years generally gives a permit that matches the length of the program. A program of two years or more can qualify for a permit of up to three years. There is one trap that quietly shortens thousands of permits: if your passport expires before your PGWP end date, IRCC issues the permit only up to your passport expiry. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before you apply so you are not handed a one year permit when you earned three.

Filling out form IMM 5710 without the common traps

Most inland PGWP applications are filed on form IMM 5710, the application to change conditions or extend your stay as a worker. The form looks simple, and that is exactly why people make avoidable mistakes on it. The two that cause the most trouble are the work history section, where prior study or part time work is entered incorrectly, and the status section, where an applicant misstates the status they are applying from. Mistakes that cost people their status

• Applying after the 180 day window has closed.
• Letting the study permit expire without applying to restore status in time.
• Assuming a program qualifies without checking the current eligible field of study list.
