Straightforward

Most people complete this themselves.

Most common reason these fail: Applying from inside Canada without a valid study or work permit behind the application.

What this page covers

A work permit or study permit lets you stay. A visitor visa lets you come back. They are separate documents, and extending one does nothing for the other.

Overview

Most visitor visa applications are made from outside Canada. There is a narrow route for people who are already here on a valid work or study permit and who need a new visitor visa so they can leave and return. It is the same form used abroad, filed through your IRCC account, and it exists for one purpose: putting a valid visa in your passport so you can come back after a trip.

Key Points

  • You need a valid permit

This route is for people in Canada holding a valid study permit or work permit. Visitor status on its own does not qualify you for it.

  • It is about re-entry, not status

You apply because your visa has expired, is about to expire, or was single entry and has been used. Your permit governs how long you may stay.

  • Apply well before you travel

IRCC asks for the application at least two months before you plan to leave. Processing does not speed up because a flight is booked.

  • Leaving first causes problems

If you depart before the visa is issued, the file can be transferred abroad, the requirements can change, and you cannot return until the new visa is in hand.

Tips
  • Check the permit expiry first: a visa issued to you will not outlast the status behind it.
  • Apply before booking: two months ahead is the guidance, not a target to beat.
  • Keep one passport: changing passports mid-application creates avoidable delay.

Who Can Apply From Inside Canada

The route is open to people who meet all of the following: you are already in Canada, you hold a valid study permit or work permit, you intend to leave and return in the near future, and your visitor visa has expired, is expiring, or was valid for a single entry you have already used.

If you are in Canada as a visitor rather than as a worker or student, this is not your application. If your permit has expired, the question in front of you is status, not travel, and that is a different page.

Why This Application Exists

Your permit and your visa do two different jobs. The permit is permission to be in Canada and to work or study here. The visa is permission to travel to Canada and to present yourself at the border.

People discover the gap at the worst moment, usually when a family emergency or a wedding means flying home and the visa in the passport ran out two years ago. Extending the permit did not renew the visa, because nothing about a permit extension touches it.

That is what this application fixes, in advance, while you are still in Canada.

Timing, and Why Leaving Early Backfires

IRCC asks for the application at least two months before you plan to leave, and the reason becomes obvious the moment something is missing from the file.

If you leave Canada while it is pending, the application can be moved to an office abroad, what is asked of you can change, and you are outside the country until the new visa is issued. People who take that risk because a flight was already booked are the ones who end up stuck abroad for weeks.

If you have no choice but to travel, tell IRCC before you go rather than after.

What It Does Not Do

It does not extend your stay. If your permit is running out, extend the permit, or apply for a visitor record if you are moving to visitor status.

It does not guarantee entry. A visa gets you to the border. The officer there still decides admissibility.

It does not repair a gap in status. If you are out of status, restoration comes first, and the deadline for it is 90 days from the day status was lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

My study permit was extended. Is my visa extended too? No. They are separate applications and separate documents.

Can I apply if I only hold visitor status? Not through this route. It is for holders of a valid study or work permit.

How long will the new visa be valid? Usually no longer than the status behind it, so a visa tied to a permit expiring next year will reflect that.

Can I travel while it is being processed? You can leave, but you cannot return until the visa is issued, and leaving can change how the application is handled.

Do I need this if I am from a visa-exempt country? Usually not. An eTA normally covers air travel back to Canada, and it is a different, much simpler application.
