Visitor Record: Extending Your Stay in Canada

SAAB Case Complexity Index™
1510

2.9 / 10

Straightforward

Usually not a complex application, but a low score is not advice to file it alone.

Most common reason these fail: Filing after the current stay has already expired, which closes the extension route and leaves only restoration.

How we scored this
Forms and evidence
Officer discretion
Refusal exposure
Deadline pressure
Cost of getting it wrong

Each of the five factors is scored 1 to 5. They are weighted, because they do not matter equally, and the weighted result is then spread across a 1 to 10 scale. General information, not legal advice.

See the self-help guides

Prepared properly, these are usually approved. That still means reading the rules against your own facts and being straight about where the file is weak. Handled wrongly, even a simple application gets refused. If anything concerns you, book a consultation. See the full SAAB Case Complexity Index™

What this page covers

The date that matters is the one on your passport stamp or your current document, not the date you happened to notice it. Applying one day late changes which application you are allowed to file.

Overview

A visitor record is the document that extends your stay in Canada as a visitor. It is issued by IRCC, it carries a new expiry date, and it is what you rely on to show you are in Canada lawfully after your original stay runs out. Most visitors are admitted for six months at the port of entry, and a visitor record is how that is extended.

Key Points

  • Apply before your status expires

IRCC asks for the application at least 30 days before your current status ends. File before the expiry date and your visitor status continues on the same conditions until a decision is made.

  • It extends your stay, not your entry

A visitor record is not a visa. It does not let you back into Canada after a trip abroad. For that you still need a valid visitor visa or, depending on your citizenship, an eTA.

  • One day late changes everything

If your status has already expired, an extension is no longer available to you. The route becomes restoration, and that door closes 90 days after the day you lost status.

  • The reason has to hold up

An officer is deciding whether you are still a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the authorised stay. A vague reason for staying longer, with no money behind it, is where these are refused.

Tips
  • Work back from the expiry date: aim to file 30 days ahead, not on the last day.
  • Keep the proof: save the submission confirmation. It is what shows your status was maintained.
  • Do not book travel on the assumption that the decision will arrive before you leave.

Who Needs a Visitor Record

You need one if you are in Canada as a visitor and you want to stay past the date you were authorised to. That covers the parent visiting for longer than planned, the visitor whose circumstances changed while they were here, and anyone whose six months at the port of entry is running out.

You also need one if you are changing what you are doing in Canada, for example moving from a work permit or study permit to visitor status while you wait for something else to be decided. Holding a valid permit today does not extend your stay automatically once that permit ends.

What a visitor record does not do is give you permission to work or study. It records that you are permitted to remain as a visitor, nothing more.

When to Apply

IRCC’s own guidance is to apply at least 30 days before your current status expires. The reason is practical rather than bureaucratic: filing before the expiry date is what keeps your status alive while the application sits in the queue.

If you file the day before expiry, you are still inside the rule and your status is maintained. If you file the day after, you are not, and the application you needed to file is a different one.

Processing times move around. Treat the expiry date as the deadline and the 30 days as the safety margin.

What Maintained Status Means While You Wait

When an extension is filed before your status expires, your original status continues on the same conditions until IRCC decides. In plain terms you may remain in Canada lawfully while you wait, under the same terms you already had.

Two things people get wrong here. Maintained status is not an upgrade: if you were not allowed to work as a visitor, you still are not. And it only exists while you stay in Canada. Leave the country while the application is pending and that protection does not travel with you.

A Visitor Record Is Not a Visa

This is the most common misunderstanding on this page. A visitor record extends how long you may stay. A visitor visa, or an eTA, is what allows you to board a flight and present yourself at the border.

If you leave Canada with a valid visitor record but an expired visa, you will not be allowed back in on the record alone. If you expect to travel, the visa is a separate application, and in some situations it can be made from inside Canada.

If Your Status Has Already Expired

An extension is no longer open to you. What remains is restoration, and it must be filed within 90 days of the day you lost status. That 90 days runs from the day your status ended, not from the day you realised it had.

Restoration is not a formality. You have to account for how the status was lost and show that you still meet the requirements of the status you are asking to be restored to, and there is no guarantee it is granted.

If you are in that position, work out the deadline first and then decide what to file. Our restoration page carries a deadline checker that will give you the last day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work while I hold a visitor record?
No. A visitor record authorises you to stay as a visitor. Working without authorisation puts both your status and any future application at risk.
How long is a visitor record valid?
For the period the officer grants, which is not always the period you asked for. Read the expiry date on the document the day it arrives.
Does my visa being valid mean I can stay longer?
No. A valid visa is permission to travel to Canada. The length of your stay comes from the port of entry stamp or your visitor record.
What if I entered without a stamp?
Where there is no stamp, the authorised stay is six months from the date of entry, so work from that date.
Will applying on the last day cause a problem?
It is filed in time, but it leaves no room for a payment failure or an upload that does not go through. That is why the guidance says 30 days.
A low score is not advice to file alone

A Visitor Record scores 2.9 out of 10.

Prepared properly these are usually approved. Filed after the current stay has expired, the extension route closes and what is left scores far higher.
