This is the question every business traveller to Canada needs answered before booking, and getting it wrong at the border is both embarrassing and difficult to undo. After-sales service is the classic grey area. Servicing equipment under an original warranty or service agreement is generally permissible as a business visitor. Servicing it under a contract signed after the sale, or performing hands-on construction work, generally is not. If your trip sits near that line, establish it before you fly rather than at the primary inspection line.

Entry Documents, and What Has Changed
The document you need depends on your nationality and how you are travelling, and both the visitor visa and eTA positions moved recently.
What You Will Need:

Visa-exempt nationals travelling by air need an electronic travel authorization

Visa-required nationals need a visitor visa, whatever the mode of travel

Mexican citizens are visa-required since 29 February 2024 and only conditionally eTA-eligible, air travel only

A multiple-entry visa to maximum validity is no longer the standard document since November 2024, and validity is at the officer’s discretion

United States citizens do not require an eTA or a visa, though the business visitor test still applies to them
For frequent business travellers the discretionary validity change matters most. A visa that would previously have been issued for ten years may now be issued for a shorter period, or as a single entry, based on purpose, finances, ties and travel history. Applications that document the ongoing commercial relationship tend to fare better than those that describe a single trip.
Preparing for Primary Inspection
Business visitors are refused entry at Canadian ports of entry more often than most travellers expect, and almost always for the same reason: they cannot substantiate the purpose of the trip on the spot.

A letter from your foreign employer stating your role, the purpose of the trip, its duration, and that you remain paid from abroad

An invitation letter from the Canadian company, where one is hosting you

Conference registration, meeting agendas or trade show credentials as applicable

If your business will involve establishing operations in Canada, employing people here, or transferring staff, the business visitor route is the wrong instrument. That belongs to the intra-company transfer or significant benefit categories, where the requirements were tightened in October 2024, and it is worth planning before you travel rather than after a refusal is on your record.
