Express Entry

Express Entry is not an immigration program. It is the system Canada uses to manage three of them, and understanding that distinction is the difference between a strategy and a guess.

You create a profile, you are scored out of 1,200 under the Comprehensive Ranking System, and you sit in a pool. Periodically IRCC runs a draw and invites everyone above a cut-off score. If you are invited, you have sixty days to file a complete permanent residence application. If you are not, you wait, and your profile expires after twelve months.

That is the whole mechanism. What decides your outcome is not effort. It is whether your profile is built to score well and to qualify for the draws that are actually running.

Your profile has to qualify under at least one of these before your score matters at all.

• Federal Skilled Worker Program
  for skilled workers with foreign experience. Requires at least one year of continuous skilled work, language ability at CLB 7 or higher, an educational credential assessment if you studied outside Canada, proof of settlement funds, and a minimum of 67 points on the six selection factors.
• Canadian Experience Class
  for people who have already worked in Canada. Requires at least one year of skilled Canadian work experience in the last three years and lower language thresholds than FSW. No proof of funds is required, which is why it suits recent graduates on a post-graduation work permit.
• Federal Skilled Trades Program
  for qualified tradespeople. Requires two years of experience in a skilled trade within the last five years, plus either a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province or territory.

The Comprehensive Ranking System runs to 1,200 points, and they are not all equally reachable.

Up to 600 come from core human capital, your spouse or partner, and skill transferability. Age, education, language and work experience do most of the work here, and language is where most people leave points on the table. The gap between CLB 8 and CLB 9 is worth more than almost anything else you can change quickly.

The other 600 come from additional factors, and the one that dominates is a provincial nomination, which is worth 600 points on its own. A nomination effectively guarantees an invitation. That is why Provincial Nominee Programs should be part of any serious Express Entry strategy rather than an afterthought.

Since 2023 IRCC has run category-based rounds alongside general ones. Instead of inviting the highest scores in the pool, these rounds invite candidates who meet a specific economic priority, and the cut-off is frequently far below a general draw.

Categories are set by the Minister and they change from year to year, along with the occupations that fall inside them. A score that is nowhere near a general draw can be comfortably inside a category draw, which is why a profile should be built with the current categories in view rather than against last year’s assumptions.

This is the single most common reason people wait in the pool unnecessarily. They benchmark themselves against a general cut-off and never check whether a category round would have taken them months ago.

Before the profile. Language testing, educational credential assessment if your education is foreign, and confirming which program you qualify under. Getting this order wrong costs weeks.

The profile. You enter the pool with a CRS score. It is valid for twelve months and can be updated at any time, and it should be, because a new test result or a work anniversary can move you.

The draw. If your score is at or above the cut-off in a round you qualify for, you receive an invitation to apply.

The sixty days. This is the part people underestimate. You have sixty days to submit a complete application with police certificates, medicals, reference letters and proof of funds. Police certificates from some countries take longer than sixty days to obtain, which is why we start collecting documents before an invitation arrives, not after.

The decision. Most complete applications are processed within about six months, though times vary.

These are the problems we are called about most often, and nearly all of them are avoidable.

• Overstated or unverifiable work experience
  reference letters that do not show hours, duties matched to the correct occupation code, or duties that do not match what the code actually describes. This is a leading cause of Express Entry refusals.
• Points claimed that cannot be proven
  a partner language result, a credential assessment, or experience that the documents do not support once an officer looks closely.
• Missing the sixty day window
  usually because police certificates or a medical were left until after the invitation arrived.
• Undeclared history
  a previous refusal, a prior application under a different name, or an undisclosed family member. Express Entry is where old files get read together.
• Letting the profile go stale
  not updating a new language result, a birthday that changes your age points, or a completed year of experience.

We confirm eligibility before anything else. Which program, which occupation code, and whether the experience you are relying on will actually stand up.

We build the score deliberately. Where the realistic points are for you, whether a retest is worth it, and whether a provincial nomination is the faster route.

We prepare documents before the invitation. Police certificates and medicals are started early so the sixty days are never the constraint.

We check your whole immigration history. Because an inconsistency with an old application surfaces here, and it surfaces as a misrepresentation concern rather than a clerical one.

If it is not viable yet, we say so and tell you what would change that.
