Who writes the invitation letter, and who signs it
The invitation letter is written and signed by the person in Canada who is inviting the visitor. That host can be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or in many cases someone holding valid temporary status such as a work or study permit. The letter is the host speaking directly to the visa officer, confirming who the visitor is, why they are coming, how long they intend to stay, where they will live during the visit, and who is paying for the trip. It is not a legal guarantee and it does not make anyone responsible for the visitor in law, but a clear and specific letter removes the doubts that often sit behind a refusal.
Does the letter need to be notarised?
No. IRCC does not require an invitation letter for a visitor visa to be notarised, sworn, or commissioned, and paying for that step adds cost without adding weight. What matters far more is that the letter is truthful, internally consistent, and matches the rest of the application. If your letter says the visitor is staying for three weeks and their travel history or funds suggest something different, the notarial stamp will not help. Accuracy is what an officer is reading for.
What a strong letter includes
A useful invitation letter identifies the host and the visitor by full legal name and date of birth, states the relationship between them plainly, gives the purpose and exact dates of the visit, sets out the accommodation arrangements, and makes clear who is funding the trip. Where the host is supporting the visit financially, the letter should say so directly rather than implying it. The letter is one document among several
An invitation letter supports an application, it does not carry it alone. Officers assess the whole picture, including the visitor’s ties to their home country, their travel and immigration history, the funds available for the trip, and whether the stated purpose is credible. A well written letter attached to a weak application will not rescue it. If your case has a complication such as a previous refusal, a prior overstay, or a family member with status problems in Canada, the letter needs to be written with that context in mind, and it is worth speaking to a licensed representative before you file.
